Integrated Urban Model for Built Environment Energy Research (iNUMBER)

Aims and Objectives

By focusing on cities, iNUMBER takes a “middle-out” approach to energy demand reduction. It will develop and demonstrate a new urban model of buildings and municipal energy services. To build this model, iNUMBER will integrate large existing data sets from cities with new data on urban forms and domestic energy use gathered by novel techniques. The resulting model will help to (1) develop and diffuse innovative technologies and practices sideways between cities, initially in India and with implications for the UK, (2) contribute findings and data upstream to national analysts and policymakers, and (3) engage downstream with building owners, technology solution providers, and the public by co-creating viable energy management opportunities.

iNUMBER will:

  • Improve municipal planning processes and drive innovation.
  • Establish India specific correlations between energy use, municipal services and land use planning to optimise future metropolitan regions.
  • Reduce innovation risk via knowledge and practice transfer between the India and the UK.
  • Learn by doing, with a particular focus on resource management and data analytics.
  • Develop a network of researchers and practitioners to build on these outcomes.
  • Increase theoretical and practical understanding of city-level management and decision processes.
  • Exchange knowledge and data with all funded projects across all three areas in the call.
  • Integrate research efforts with ongoing work in India, the UK, and internationally.
